Still, 800 million people in the Third World live in abject poverty, in an inhuman state from which they can not free themselves. This results in economic and social conflicts. Often they discharge themselves by force of arms and threaten the peace. Peace can not be secured if conflicts are not contained, their causes are not eliminated. Contributing to securing peace is the task of development policy. The goal of development cooperation between the Federal Republic of Germany and third world countries is to promote economic and social development in Third World countries through self-help. Development policy aims to help people in more than 120 developing countries improve their living conditions on their own terms and according to their own ideas. Development policy serves the reconciliation of interests between North and South. She practices international solidarity. Today, the Federal Republic of Germany, together with France, takes 2nd place as donor of development aid with more than DM 6 billion annually to the USA. Their cooperation with individual developing countries is realized in concrete projects and programs, for which both sides make financial or personal contributions. The benefits of the Federal Republic can consist in a grant or in a low-interest loan. There are skilled workers or goods delivered. At the beginning of every project there is an extensive project appraisal. Each project is technically, economically and economically evaluated before its beginning and examined for its social impact. The Federal Government commissions experienced organizations to handle development projects and programs. The most important are the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) and the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ). In addition, the federal government also provides grants for development projects of the churches and other organizations that work directly with their partners in developing countries. Such partners are z. Foundations, churches, cooperatives and self-help groups. It is precisely these German organizations that offer citizens in the Federal Republic many opportunities to engage in development policy.
