This brand is part of the first permanent stamp series of the Saarland, the so-called »Saar I«. The motif consists of the Benedictine abbey Mettlach with its well-known "Old Tower". The Benedictine abbey was resettled, destroyed and rebuilt throughout history. Today, the Baroque building of the former abbey (created by abbot Ferdinand de Koeler) with a front length of 112 m is understood as the "Old Abbey". The "Old Tower" is an octagon from the end of the 10th century, rebuilt in the 13th century and until 1794 was Liutwin's funerary church.
