Here is the Porta Nigra (Latin for Black Gate) shown. This is the northern city gate of the city of Trier, built in the years 313 to 316 by the Romans. In the 11th century the Simeonskirche was built into the gate. Except for the apse, however, all installations were removed in the 19th century. The catalog numbers 32 to 41 appeared in November and December 1948 and in January and July 1949. For the sake of systematics, the editorial board recorded the first day of each month as the first day of issue.
