This stamp shows Wilhelm Emmanuel Freiherr von Ketteler. The important bishop was born on December 25, 1811 in Münster (Westphalia). He was a deputy of the Frankfurt Parliament in 1848/49 and of the Reichstag in 1871/72. From 1850 to 1870 he was bishop of Mainz. He campaigned in his writings, speeches and sermons for freedom and independence of the church in political and cultural matters. He was with Kolping founder of the Christian-Social Movement, which is committed to solving social problems. He died on July 13, 1877 in Burghausen (Upper Bavaria).
