This stamp shows Wilhelm Emanuel Freiherr von Ketteler. The important bishop was born on December 25, 1811 in Münster (Westphalia). He was a deputy of the Frankfurt Parliament in 1848/49 and of the Reichstag in 1871/72. From 1850 to 1870 he was bishop of Mainz. He campaigned in his writings, speeches and sermons for freedom and independence of the church in political and cultural matters. He was with Kolping founder of the Christian-Social Movement, which is committed to solving social problems. He died on July 13, 1877 in Burghausen (Upper Bavaria). The catalog numbers 32 to 41 appeared in November and December 1948 and in January and July 1949. For the sake of systematics, the editorial board recorded the first day of each month as the first day of issue.
