On this stamp the lock Rastatt is pictured. It was built from 1698 to 1705 as one of the largest, earliest, German castle complexes and the oldest residence of the baroque on the Upper Rhine. Ludwig Wilhelm of Baden-Baden had it built for himself and his wife Sibylla Augusta by the architect Domenico Egidio Rossi. Since it was not damaged in the World Wars, it can be visited today in the restored condition. (The catalog numbers 16, 17, 20, 21, 23, 25, 26 and 27 appeared in July and August 1848. For the sake of systematics, the editors recorded the date of issue 1 July 1948 and 1 August 1948).
