Only a few months after the end of the war, at a time marked by destruction, hardship and suffering, enthusiastic stamp collectors met and, despite all their borders, soon founded new clubs. In February 1946 belonged to the first national association 52 clubs. From this went out on 26 October 1946 in Hanover, the Association of German Philatelists (British Zone), which was extended on 30 September 1949 to a pan-German association. This confederation of German philatelists represented the interests of collectors at that time and offers information for more than 80,000 collectors (association and specialist journal »philatelie«), human encounters in more than 1,000 associations and interest groups, advice, help and collector protection. This nonprofit work of the association has remained unique until today and receives high support from well-known institutions and state agencies. A first national stamp exhibition in 1951 in Wuppertal followed later internationally acclaimed exhibitions. With a first exhibition in Moscow in 1978, the BDPh followed the idea of cross-border and friendship-forming peoples' connection. Since 1990, all German collectors have been reunited with five other regional associations in the new federal states and are jointly represented by the Federation of German Philatelists in the FIP.
