Day of the Philatelists 1971 For the Day of the Philatelists 1971, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issued two special postage stamps, one of which was a supplement. The sums collected will be made available to the Philatelist Association of the GDR in the German Cultural Association. The "Philatelist Day" 1971 For the fifth time in 1971, GDR philatelists celebrate their "Philatelist Day", which replaced the former "Stamp Day". This year, on October 24, it will be marked by a variety of public events promoting philately and accounting for the cultural-political work of the Friends of Stamps and other postal documents. The two special stamps bring motifs that report on modern airmail transport and a chapter on postal history. 10 + 5 Pfennig airmail loading on the airfield When Otto Lilienthal 80 years ago was the first man with a self-made hang glider a flight distance of 15 meters and on December 17, 1903, the Wright brothers - also in evaluation of the experiments Lilienthals - the idea of flying with motor aircraft realized in a 12-second and 53-meter-long flight, hardly anyone suspected that here was the beginning of a development that led within a few decades to a modern, global air traffic. Today, the aircraft is also indispensable as a means of mail delivery. This clearly illustrates the mark at 10 + 5 penny. It shows in the foreground a luggage cart with airmail bags and in the background the loading of airmail into a TU 134 of the INTERFLUG, the airline of the GDR. Machines of the type TU 134 are the first turbine air jet aircraft that were commissioned at INTERFLUG. On the occasion of the Leipzig Spring Fair in 1969, they carried out the first special flights with mail transport and have been employed in regular service since April 1969. The international airmail service was taken up in the GDR on 1 March 1950 to 25 countries, in 1960 there were already 76 states, after which airmail shipments were handled. At the moment there are nearly 100 countries. A big part of the transport of airmail for the GDR is the INTERFLUG with its currently about 50,000 kilometers long route network. There are direct lines to many parts of Europe, Africa and the Near and Middle East, providing connections to all other countries in the world. The further development of the INTERFLUG route network, combined with the use of even larger and faster types of aircraft, will contribute to the continuous improvement of airmail transport in international postal traffic.
