The »Drachenstich« in Furth im Wald is the oldest German folk play and goes back to the St. George legend, after which the courageous knight triumphs over the dragon. The kite engraving symbolizes the victory of good over evil. It was first shown in 1590 during a Corpus Christi procession. In 1878 there was an open dispute between the church and the citizens, because the popularity of the Volksschauspiels more and more neglected the spiritual aspect. Since 1887 the dragon engraving takes place in August. Even today, the legend of the Furthern is performed every year in the festival week in August.
