The Gallimarkt in Leer is today, with around half a million visitors, the largest folk festival in East Frisia and celebrates October 8-12, 2008, the 500th anniversary of its initial alignment. The market takes place every year on the five days following the second Wednesday in October, the day of Saint Gall. Until this day, the farmers should have brought their harvest. In 1508, the ruler of East Frisia, Edzard the Great (born in 1461 and died on 14 February 1528), gave Leer the market rights. Originally the market was »Gallus« a junk and cattle market. However, he gained more and more importance and eventually developed into a folk festival popular far beyond the borders of Leers.
