The fossil deposit Grube Messel east of Darmstadt is a worldwide unique monument of the developmental history of animal and plant life. Here are geological layers of the Old Tertiary come to light, about 49 million years old deposits of a freshwater lake. They consist of an organic substance rich clay stone, so-called "oil shale", as well as layers of sand and occasionally gravel. The oil shale contains the famous, in the quality of their preservation unique fossils of plants and animals. Because of this outstanding scientific witness value, the Messel Pit was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1995.
