The special postage stamp on the occasion of the 33rd international meeting of the Austrian Society for Surgery shows Theodor Billroth during an operation during a lecture. Born on April 26, 1829 on the island of Rügen in Bergen, the surgeon was the founder of the "Second Medical School in Vienna" and led the surgery of his century to world fame. In the light of this tradition, the Austrian Society of Surgery was founded in 1958, which today acts as an umbrella organization for 13 working groups and associated specialist societies. Austria's most easterly state, Burgenland, was deliberately chosen as the venue for the congress in 1992. This conference was intended to underline the Central European meeting place of surgeons from East and West.
