The doctrine of the kidneys, nephrology, is now an integral part of internal medicine. Medical progress today allows treatments with artificial kidneys (dialysis) and kidney transplants. The first successful treatment with an artificial kidney was made by William Kolff in Holland in 1943, the first kidney transplant in 1952. In 1961, the European Nephrological Society, or EDTA or ERA, was founded in Amsterdam. Every year she holds a congress for the scientific showcase of European nephrology. In 1970, the Austrian Society for Nephrology was founded by Prof. Watschinger. After 1973, it was the second time in 1990 that this congress was held in Vienna. This fact also reflects the numerous achievements of Austrian researchers in this field.
