In the Middle Ages, mental patients were either considered to be devils or witches. The humane understanding with mentally ill people should take many more centuries to come. Developments in the 19th and 20th centuries finally brought about a change. A pioneer in the treatment of triggering processes for psycho-organic diseases was Wagner v. Chr. Jauregg (1857-1940). Parallel to the development of somatic treatment options, psychotherapy developed. In the early fifties, French researchers opened the field of drug therapy of mental illness, the psychotropic drugs. For the psychiatry of the present there was an increasing need for cross-regional cooperation and so, on the initiative of the French psychiatrist Henry Ey (1900-1977), shortly after the Second World War, an "International Society for the Organization of World Congresses in Psychiatry" was created , From her in 1961 the "World Association for Psychiatry". From July 11 to 16, the VII World Congress on Psychiatry took place in Vienna. The special postage stamp issued on this occasion shows in the center of concentrically arranged, differently colored circles, a schematic representation of the Stephansdomes, together with the signum of the world association for psychiatry.
