The International Confederation of the Kneipp Movement held its congress in Vienna for the second time in May 1982. Sebastian Kneipp was born on 17 May 1821 in Stephansried near Ottobeuern in the Bavarian Swabia. Already in his childhood he got to know poverty and privations and wanted to become a minister. On May 2, 1855, he went to Wöhringshofen at the request of the Augsburg bishop to look after the local Dominican monastery. In addition, he found enough time to deal with issues of health and disease control. Kneipp's healing method was the starting point for a general treatment that intends to holistically maintain and restore health in the physical and mental and emotional areas. Water treatment, the famous Kneipp baths, herbal remedies and active and passive exercise therapy all played a major role here. The success of this natural healing method was soon known throughout the world and spread rapidly. In 1982, for example, there were 550 local associations with 130,000 members. Sebastian Kneipp died on 17 June 1897.
