Of the approximately 60,000 preserved manuscripts of the Middle Ages and the early modern period, around 1,100 are owned by the Austrian National Library. Among the rare motifs, not only in the Vienna inventory, is the representation of the Holy Trinity in human form in the so-called Paternitas-type: God father frontal enthroned with Christ in his lap, which holds the spirit dove at his breast. This iconographic type, also depicted on the stamp motif, appears relatively late, not before the 12th century. In the East he is preceded by the Christ-Emanuel type: Christ as pre-existent Logos, according to the vision of Daniel (7.9) represented as an old man, holds Christ Emmanuel, the incarnate Logos, in his lap. This corresponds to the text of the Gospel of John (1:18). One finds this type in Byzantine miniatures of the 11th century. The trinitarian miniature of the brand motif points to the connections between eastern and western cultural-historical developments. The 16th International Congress of Byzantines, which took place in Vienna from 4 to 10 October 1981, dealt with the influence and expression of Byzantine culture and was held in the Vienna Hofburg.
