The Red Cross was founded in 1863 at the suggestion of the Swiss Henri Dunant in Geneva by 17 states, including Austria. The reason for founding this organization, which since its inception has helped millions of people, was the Battle of Solferino in 1859. Shaken by the suffering Dunant saw on the battlefield, he encouraged the founding of the International Relief Society. The global organization today convenes an international conference every four years. The XX. International Red Cross Conference takes place in Vienna in 1965, which is why the special stamp is launched. The International Red Cross Conferences have the task to deal not only with problems of the Red Cross activity in general, but in particular also with questions of the international humanitarian law and show the states new ways in this direction. The guiding principle must always be Henri Dunant's motto that, firstly, all human beings are brothers and, secondly, that all needy people must be helped. The brand image brings the International Red Cross emblem on a dark background, which is somewhat obscured by a gauze strip from the upper right corner.
