Meritorious Personalities of the German Workers 'Movement The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues four special postage stamps depicting meritorious personalities of the German workers' movement. Special cancellation from January 24 to March 23, 1989 Otto Meier Born on January 3, 1889 in Magdeburg, the son of a lithographer. 1911 member of the SPD. During the First World War he repeatedly condemned the imperialist policy of oppressing other peoples. 1917 Member of the USPD. 1919 - 1922 worked as an editor at the central organ of the USPD "Die Freiheit" and at the party newspapers in Hanover and Gotha. In 1922 he joined the SPD and was until 1933 chairman of the press commission of the central organ of the SPD "forward". Otto Meier actively resisted fascism, for which he was deported to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp in 1939 and 1944. After the liberation he belonged to the organizers of the reconstruction of the SPD; Member of the Central Committee of his party. As editor-in-chief of the central organ "Das Volk" he worked for the creation of a unified labor party. 1946-1950 member of the party executive and of the Central Secretariat of the SED; was involved above all in the expansion of the party press. 1949-1952 President of the Brandenburg Landtag. 1949/50 he belonged to the Provisional People's Chamber and from 1949-1958 the Land Chamber of the GDR. He died on April 10, 1962 in Potsdam.
