Solidarity The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues a multicolored special postage stamp "Solidarity" with a supplement. The amounts received as a supplement are made available to the Solidarity Committee of the GDR Special stamp from 5 September to 4 November 1989 Solidarity - UNICEF Ensuring a happy and peaceful future and tomorrow for the adolescent generation is one of the most important concerns of our socialist society, but the satisfaction and joy of the carefree life of our youngest do not make us forget the suffering and misery of many other children in the world - international solidarity With the struggle of the peoples of Africa, Asia and Latin America for peace, national independence and social progress is for the population of the GDR a constitutional task and a matter of the heart, an expression of which is the long-standing support of our country for the meritorious work of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). On December 11, 1946, this organization was created by resolution of the UN General Assembly. Its original task was to help normal children and adolescents, who had suffered the most from the consequences of the fascist wars of war, to return to normal living conditions. After its transformation into a permanent institution in 1953, UNICEF dedicated itself to the needs of children and mothers in the countries of Africa, Asia, Latin America and the eastern Mediterranean. Currently, UNICEF is implementing programs in 119 countries with more than one billion children. Caused by centuries of colonial oppression and continued economic exploitation, around 40,000 of them die each day as a result of malnutrition, poor hygiene and lack of medical care - a Hiroshima every week. The focus of UNICEF's work, therefore, is to improve the living conditions of the children, to immunize all children against the six most dangerous childhood diseases, and to build up education. An extensive program aims to provide each village with a well with clean water. Not least due to the work of UNICEF, child mortality has been halved in almost all developing countries since 1950. The committed work of UNICEF is also supported by the government of the GDR and its UNICEF National Committee through a variety of activities. This body, in close collaboration with the GDR Solidarity Committee, annually provides a large volume of medicines, vaccines, medical devices and school materials to support UNICEF country programs. These funds are financed by donations from the population of the GDR to the Central Solidarity Account 444, password "UNICEF". In addition, around 30 million marks from the population's 444 donations are used each year to provide solidarity benefits to children from developing countries. Solidarity with the needy children in the world is our duty. Remember the children depicted on this stamp, for whom hunger and lack of care by society are still part of everyday life.
