Leipzig Autumn Fair 1989 On the occasion of the Leipzig Autumn Fair 1989, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues a block with two multi-colored special postage stamps. Special cancellation from 22 August to 21. October 1989 Leipzig Autumn Fair 1989 With the founding of the German Democratic Republic on October 7, 1949, a new stage of its almost 825-year history began for the Leipzig Trade Fair. On the basis of the dynamic development of the GDR economy, Leipzig Trade Fair made an impressive development on the 40th anniversary of the founding of the first German workers and peasants state. At the first Leipzig trade fair after the founding of the GDR - that was the 1950 Leipzig Spring Fair - exhibitors from 15 and visitors from 52 countries took part. At the Leipzig Spring Fair in 1989, the exhibitors came from more than 60 countries of all continents. Visitors even traveled from 113 countries. The development of the Leipziger Messe is particularly evident in the enlargement of the exhibition space. In 1950 there were almost 145 000 square meters. In March 1989, nearly 35-0,000 square meters were leased to foreign exhibitors. This is divided into 160000 square meters in exhibition halls, 110000 square meters in exhibition halls and 80000 square meters of open space at the exhibition center. For the regular visitor of the Leipzig fairs, the renewal of the Leipzig Trade Fair was and is particularly visible through several new buildings on the exhibition grounds, which are concentrated at the western entrance near the Deutsche Bücherei. Therefore, the view of the fairgrounds with this part in the foreground was chosen as a motive for the special postage stamp for the Leipzig Autumn Fair 1989. Halls 7 and 7.11 as well as the extension of Hall 20 are grouped around the Deutsche Platz and a newly created turning loop of the Leipzig tram at the west entrance to the exhibition center. With their elongated façades, they form an impressive picture of modern exhibition buildings. First, the 168 meter long Hall 7 was handed over in 1977 for use, which can also be converted and outside of the Leipzig fairs many other events - especially sports competitions - serves in this hall are also dining facilities, all year round for the Leipzig and their guests are active. 1980 follows the exhibition hall 7.11. with the new west entrance. In addition to many export and negotiation offices of the GDR Foreign Trade, this building also houses the press service Messegelände (a branch office of the Press Center) and, above all, the service facility "Technikinformation". Here, engineers, scientists and technicians receive specialist information for each trade fair and can obtain information on user symposia and specialist lectures by exhibitors. In 1987, for the first time, the supplementary building of Hall 20 with a floor area of 177 x 72 meters and a height of 19 meters was used by the exhibitors. With more than 9,000 square meters of net exhibition space, it is one of Leipzig's largest exhibition sites. Immediately before the 40th anniversary of the founding of the GDR, visitors to the Leipzig Autumn Fair in 1989 will be able to convince themselves that Leipzig is not only the world's leading trading center and center of East-West trade, but also technical requirements for successful trade fairs in other construction projects creates the nineties.
