Special cancellations from October 18 to December 17, 1988 Ship lifts, lifting and drawbridges Waterways have always played a major role in the history of transport. The need for effective use on the one hand and the production of secure land connections on the other hand has led to imposing structures. Their most important ones are preserved as technical monuments. Special technical solutions, building construction and architecture as well as their landscape character characterize these monuments of the traffic history. 90 Pfennig value: Ziegelgraben bascule bridge Rügendamm At the station Stralsund-Rügendamm then this traffic connection is an important link between the mainland and the island of Rügen. From 1883 until the commissioning of the Rügen dam in 1936, there was only one railway ferry connection. The Rügendamm is not a continuous earth dam, it is interrupted by two bridges. The Sund Bridge is exclusively flood opening to prevent the flooding of parts of the city Stralsund. The brick trench bridge is formed in its middle part as a single-leaf bascule bridge with a horizontal beam and portal. The flap length is 28 m. It takes two minutes to raise or lower the flap. By folding up, ships are allowed to pass through. Both bridges were blown up in 1945 by the fascist Wehrmacht. After a quick reconstruction, they were able to return to traffic in 1947.
