Technical monuments - ship lifts, lifting and drawbridges The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes five multi-colored special postage stamps depicting technical monuments - ship lifts, lifting and drawbridges. Special cancellations from October 18 to December 17, 1988 Ship lifts, lifting and drawbridges Waterways have always played a major role in the history of transport. The need for effective use on the one hand and the production of secure land connections on the other hand has led to imposing structures. Their most important ones are preserved as technical monuments. Special technical solutions, building construction and architecture as well as their landscape character characterize these monuments of the traffic history. 70 Pfennig value: drawbridge with lock in Altfriesack (district Potsdam) As one of the few surviving bridges of this construction, it spans the Ruppiner Wasserstraße at the river kilometer 29,163. Bridge and lock were built in the years 1787-1789. The original wooden structure of the bridge was replaced in 1927 by a steel structure. The lock received 1931 new gates and an electrical control. The drawbridge has on one side a fixed support and a swingarm. The opening reaches a clear width of 6.90 m. The lock is passable by ships with the so-called Finow gauge (40.20 m x 4.80 m).
