Special cancellations from October 18 to December 17, 1988 Ship lifts, lifting and drawbridges Waterways have always played a major role in the history of transport. The need for effective use on the one hand and the production of secure land connections on the other hand has led to imposing structures. Their most important ones are preserved as technical monuments. Special technical solutions, building construction and architecture as well as their landscape character characterize these monuments of the traffic history. 5 Pfennig value: Lifting bridge in Magdeburg The lifting bridge over the Stromelbe in Magdeburg with its span of 90 m at that time was the longest of its kind in Europe. It was commissioned in 1848 as a railway and pedestrian bridge. The original bridge had eight openings, one of which was converted to a swing bridge in 1871. As early as 1912, the turning bridge section was converted to the lifting bridge. It has a total length of 215 m. Its maximum lift is 2.87 m. The built in 1934 synchronous control of the two drive motors causes different mechanical loads on the bridge sides are compensated immediately.
