XV. Olympic Winter Games 1988 On the occasion of the XV. Olympic Winter Games 1988, the Ministry of Postal and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issued four multicolored special postage stamps, including one with surcharge, and a special postage stamp block out. The sums raised will be made available to the Society to promote the Olympic idea in the GDR. Special cancellation from 19 January to 18 March 1988 XV. Olympic Winter Games 1988 Important sports events, such as Olympic Games, World and European Championships as well as championships of the GDR are a traditional occasion for the Ministry of Postal and Telecommunications of the GDR to issue series of special postage stamps. Under the title "XVth Olympic Winter Games 1988", at the request of the Society for the Promotion of the Olympic Idea in the GDR and in accordance with the National Olympic Committee of the GDR, a series with four stamps and one block will be published. New to this series is that the graphic artist Manfred Gottschall, Karl-Marx-Stadt, has succeeded in impressively portraying athletes in the practice of a sport. Thus, the motif lives and the aesthetics of the sport is clearly expressed. It shows sports in which athletes of the GDR have been at the forefront of world championship for years. The block, worth 1.20 Mark, shows a panoramic view of the competition venues, focusing on the combined bobsleigh and racing sledge track built by the GDR in the organizer country. A racing sledge in full speed and a double when braking after the finish line complete the motif. Racing sled athletes of the GDR have always won medals in the past Olympic Games.
