Solidarity The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues a multicolored special postage stamp "Solidarity" with supplement and with a secondary field. The sums collected will be made available to the Solidarity Committee of the GDR. The side panels are printed alternating black and red. Special Stamps from 4 October to 3 December 1988 Solidarity - a life-giving principle of maintaining life and health in peace is one of the deeply humanistic principles of our society, and therefore we feel responsible for helping where life and health are caused by wars. Hunger and neocolonial exploitation are at risk. Symbolic of many thousands of sick and needy children, the African child depicted on the emission is waiting for help - for the help of his friends. In addition, it becomes clear how medical care can alleviate human suffering. The Solidarity Committee of the GDR has provided considerable services in the field of health care in recent years. Both the provision of medical equipment, medicines and consumables, as well as the deployment of doctors and nurses, are considered by the recipient countries as a truly humanistic act, an indispensable aid and support. Solidarity services for the hospital "Karl Marx" in Managua, for the medical faculty Gondar and the tropical hospital Metema in Ethiopia, for the Center for Orthopedics and Rehabilitation and the Hospital of Friendship in Hanoi, for the hospital "17. April "in Phnom Penh, are convincing results of the active solidarity of our country's citizens and health workers. Tens of thousands of people received solid medical treatment in these facilities for the first time in their lives. In the complex of medical and social support, the additional programs for the United Nations Children's Fund together with the UNICEF National Committee of the GDR are classified. Helping the children in the world is an integral part of our international solidarity. The high level of donations makes it possible to provide child-specific services in the form of medicines, food, blankets and clothing every year. In total, the Solidarity Committee uses about 30 million marks a year, of which about 5 million marks under the UNICEF program. They benefited mainly the children of Nicaragua, Ethiopia, Angola, Moçambique, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Laos and Kampuchea, as well as the children of the ANC, SWAPO and the PLO. From the reports of doctors and nurses who have provided "on the spot" medical help or in our hospitals wounded patriots through their skills and their self-sacrificing readiness again health and courage, it is always clear how necessary our help is and what great recognition she finds. Wilhelm Pieck's words on the side panel "Our solidarity is not almsgiving, but power source, appeal for mutual help" apply to the solidarity services in the field of health care as well as the training of young cadres, the help for children and the delivery of material goods. This assistance is made possible only by the active anti-imperialist solidarity that today shapes the moral face of the citizens of our republic. Solidarity is an active way of life, partisan in the fight for a dignified existence in a peaceful world.
