Technical monuments - ship lifts, lifting and drawbridges The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes five multi-colored special postage stamps depicting technical monuments - ship lifts, lifting and drawbridges. Special cancellations from October 18 to December 17, 1988 Ship lifts, lifting and drawbridges Waterways have always played a major role in the history of transport. The need for effective use on the one hand and the production of secure land connections on the other hand has led to imposing structures. Their most important ones are preserved as technical monuments. Special technical solutions, building construction and architecture as well as their landscape character characterize these monuments of the traffic history. 10 Pfennig value: Ship lift Magdeburg - Rothensee This lift is the most important in the GDR after Niederfinow. It was put into operation in 1938 and forms the connection between the Mittelland Canal and the Elbe as well as the Märkische waterways. It is designed as a two-swivel lift. The height difference to overcome is on average 16 m, the lifting and lowering process takes three minutes. The entire system consists of a lift with floats and trough, the lower and upper stance and the canal bridge. The buoyancy of the floats compensates for the mass of the water-filled trough. Eight drive motors drive the four pairs of screw spindles.
