Meritorious Personalities of the German Workers 'Movement, Edition 1987 The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes four commemorative postage stamps depicting deserving personalities of the German workers' movement. No special first day cover envelope Special cancellation from March 24 to May 23, 1987 Fritz Gäbler He was born on January 12, 1897, the son of a slipper maker in Meissen, attended elementary school and learned pottery. He joined Social Democracy in 1914 and fought illegally against the First World War. In the November Revolution of 1918 he stood in Darmstadt on the side of the revolutionary soldiers' council. In 1919 he became a member of the leadership of the Free Socialist Youth in Jena and co-founder of the local group of the KPD. In 1921 he took part in the March battles in Central Germany. In the same year he was appointed secretary of the Communist Youth in Thuringia and was from 1922 to 1924 chairman of the Communist Youth of Germany. From 1924 to 1929 he worked in various editorial offices and denounced in particular the armaments policy of the imperialist government. Therefore, in 1929, he was sentenced to two years imprisonment at Gollnow Fortress. Since 1931 he was a member of parliament in Thuringia and party secretary for East Thuringia in Gera. In February 1933 he was arrested by the fascists and held until 1934. From 1935 until the liberation by the Red Army he was incarcerated in the Brandenburg-Görden penitentiary. Fritz Gäbler was one of the activists of the first hour. From autumn 1945 to 1947 he worked as district secretary of the KPD and the SED in Erfurt. He was a delegate of the Association Party Congress of the KPD and SPD in Berlin. From 1947 to 1949 he headed the Department of Industry in the Thuringian Ministry of Economic Affairs and was then Deputy Head of the Science and Technology Administration at the German Economic Commission and later at the State Planning Commission. From the 4th to the 7th Party Congress, as Chairman of the Central Revision Commission of the SED and later as its member, he contributed significantly to the political and organizational consolidation of the party. On March 26, 1974, Fritz Gäbler died in Berlin.
