Leipzig Spring Fair 1986 On the occasion of the Leipzig Spring Fair 1986, the Ministry of Postal and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes two multicolored special postage stamps. Special cancellation from March 11 to May 10, 1986 35-pfennig value: 1946 to 1986 - 40 years of Leipzig Peace Fairs When on 8 May 1946 - exactly one year after the surrender of Hitler's Germany - the "First Leipzig Peace Fair" opened its doors, It began a new epoch in the hundreds of years long tradition of the Leipzig fairs. For this reason, the Leipzig spring fair 1986 is commemorated the 40-year peace development of the Leipzig trade fairs. The "First Leipzig Peace Fair" took place from 8 to 12 May 1946. It was prepared on the basis of Order No. 73 of the Supreme Chief of the Soviet Military Administration for Germany of March 6, 1946. There were 2,700 exhibitors, who used an area of 26,355 square meters and presented their products in 31 sectors. As the first and only foreign exhibitor, the Soviet Union participated. At the end of the war almost all trade fair houses and halls were destroyed or unusable. In self-sacrificing development work, however, activists of the first hour and courageous anti-fascists, with the active support of the Soviet military administration, prepared five exhibition centers in the city center, four exhibition halls and parts of the outdoor area for this first post-war fair. Among the 172,428 visitors were guests from 16 foreign countries. Particularly noteworthy is the visit of leading personalities of the occupying powers. Among them were the commander-in-chief of the Soviet occupying forces in Germany, Army General Sokolowski, the American Commander-in-Chief, General Clay, and the Deputy Commander-in-Chief, General Robertson. The trade fair achievements exceeded all expectations. However, the exhibitors of the Soviet occupation zone accepted orders for 115 million Reichsmark unconditionally and for half a billion RM under reserve (due to the unsecured supply of raw materials). The export business was revived. Thus, this fair was a worthy start for a new stage of the Leipzig Trade Fair. This was also recognized by the British news agency Reuter, which reported worldwide: "The Leipzig Trade Fair is reopened and brings to life a 800-year tradition amidst the chaotic economic life in post-war Europe."
