Solidarity The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues a multi-colored special postage stamp with a surcharge of "Solidarity". The sums collected will be made available to the Solidarity Committee of the GDR. Special cancellation from November 4, 1986 to January 3, 1987 Knowledge is power One of the most enduring legacies of imperialist colonial politics is educational malaise and illiteracy. Immediately after achieving political independence, more than 90 percent of the population in the young nation states of Asia, Africa and Latin America were illiterate. Consequently, one of the priority objectives of the progressive states of these regions was an education policy that guarantees sound knowledge for everyone. It was necessary to quickly catch up with the acute shortage of qualified workers, engineers and scientists, to strengthen the national economy and to underpin political and social independence. The support of the GDR for these states in all areas of social construction is versatile. It ranges from the deployment of specialists, teachers and doctors through the provision of material goods and the establishment of production and educational institutions in these countries to the education and training of young cadres in the GDR. The training of skilled workers has emerged in recent years as the most important form of our solidary support. It is solidarity for the future. To clarify this is the aim of this stamp. Foreigners have been studying at colleges and technical colleges in the GDR for 35 years; Do you complete vocational training or further education in companies in our country. Increasingly, cadres of the liberation movements of the ANC, SWAPO and the PLO qualify. After completing their studies or vocational qualification, they return to their home countries or into the ranks of their liberation organizations and help to overcome their inherited backwardness and to pass on their knowledge. For the education and training of foreign cadres in the GDR over 100 million marks are made available annually from the donations of the population of the GDR. On the value of this solidarity-based aid in the spirit of proletarian internationalism, an African folk wisdom says: "The development aid of capitalist countries resembles a gifted fish that you eat enough to starve yourself in. The socialist countries give us fishing supplies and teach us, deal with it, so we catch the fish ourselves and never have to go hungry. "
