Leipzig Autumn Fair 1984 At the Leipzig Autumn Fair in 1984, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes two multicolored postage stamps. Special cancellation from August 28 to October 27, 1984 10 Pfennig value: Fregehaus, Katharinenstraße 11 The illustration on the stamp shows one of the most famous and oldest Leipzig merchant houses, the Fregehaus, Katharinenstraße 11. The Fregehaus - actually a house complex of four buildings Consisting vaults and storage floors and a spacious courtyard - is part of the central list of monuments of the GDR. The front house seen in the picture was restored in 1983. The splendid Baroque facade dates from a reconstruction of the house, which was built around 1540. The mayor of Leipzig, Johann Gregor Fuchs, together with master carpenter Johann Christian Schmidt carried out the conversion on behalf of a businessman from Leipzig in 1706/07. The gate walls on the street and some interior details still refer to the creation of the house in the time of the German early Renaissance. The Fregehaus is not only a valuable architectural monument, it is also an important cultural, in particular history of economic history. In the second half of the 18th century, the house came into the possession of the merchant Christian Gottlob Frege, who made it by merchandise trade and banking business to an economic powerhouse of the first order. Among other things, Frege was co-founder of the Leipzig Economic Society of 176.4, a combination of progressive forces to promote economic development. Goethe, the Humboldt brothers, Stein and Hardenberg were clients of the Frege bank in state affairs, but they were also friends of the successful merchant - as were other famous contemporaries.
