In 1911 he became a member of the SPD and joined in 1917 to the USPD. During the November Revolution in Germany he was a member of a workers 'and soldiers' council. In 1922 he joined the SPD again and has since worked in the party executive; he headed the municipal political newspaper of the SPD "The community". Since 1922 he was a member of the Berlin City Council. In 1927 he was elected to the Prussian Landtag. Max Fechner fought actively against the fascist rule, for which he was persecuted and thrown into prison and concentration camp. During this time he matured into a convinced fighter for the unity of the working class. After the liberation from fascism he put all his strength for the anti-fascist-democratic rebuilding, for the establishment and the consolidation of the first workers and peasants state. He belonged in 1945 to the initiators of the reconstruction of the SPD and worked together with Otto Grotewohl for the union of his party with the KPD. After the unification of both workers' parties, he was elected to the party leadership of the SED, was deputy party chairman and member of the Central Secretariat of the SED. From 1949 to 1953 Max Fechner was appointed to the government of the GDR as Minister of Justice. In the following years he worked as a party veteran tirelessly for the construction of socialism in the GDR. Max Fechner died on September 13, 1973 in Berlin.
