Important Personalities, Edition 1981 The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes six special postage stamps with illustrations of important personalities. No Special First Day Cover Special Cancellation from May 5 to July 4, 1981 Major Figures 25 - Pfennig Value: Richard Dedekind (6 October 1831 to 12 February 1916) He was one of the great mathematicians of the 19th century. After graduating in 1852 with CF Gauss in Göttingen, he worked from 1854 to 1958 as a lecturer at the University of Göttingen, from 1858 to 1862 as a professor of mathematics at the Polytechnic in Zurich and from 1862 to the end of his life as a professor of mathematics at the Technical University of Braunschweig. Dedekind created a comprehensive theory whose method was decisive for many questions of mathematics, not least for the development of modern algebra. Dedekind was a member of several academies and multiple honorary doctor. The academy in Berlin, the today's academy of the sciences of the GDR, selected him 1880 to its Corresponding member.
