Endangered animals With illustrations of several endangered species, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues six multi-colored special postage stamps. Endangered animals 5-pfennig value: Okapi The Okapi is the last large animal known to science. Only in 1901 was the discovery of this jungle giraffe. Their occurrence is limited to the territory of today's Zaire. In 1919, the first living okapi arrived in a zoo, in the zoo in Antwerp. While the first imported okapis were weakened by the long transport and infested with parasites usually only a short time lived, their attitude is now quite successful by air transport and better medicines. In 1954, the first Okapi was born in Antwerp in a zoo. Most okapis kept today are already born in the zoo, but the total number is quite low with almost 60 animals. Data on the free-standing stocks are missing, since a count in the impenetrable tropical rain forest is impossible. In the Zoo Antwerp, an International Studbook for the Okapi is kept.
