Important personalities, issue 1979 With the illustrations of important personalities, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues six special postage stamps. No Special First Day Cover Special Cancellation from March 20 to May 19, 1979 Significant Personalities 35 Pfennig Value: Georg Forster (November 27, 1754 to January 10, 1794) He was a pioneer in ethnology, especially by describing a book directed by James Cook Expedition 1772 to 1775, in which he had participated as a naturalist. With writings on peoples and geography, on aesthetics and philosophy, he contributed to the humanistic ideas of classical German literature. In 1779 he became professor of natural history at the Carolinum in Kassel, 1784 professor of natural history in Vilnius and 1788 senior librarian of the electoral library in Mainz. 1792/1793 he was a leading politician of the Mainz Jacobin Republic, the first democratic republican state founding on German soil. He was a staunch supporter of the equal rights of peoples and races. Georg Forster belonged to the Berlin Academy, today's Academy of Sciences of the GDR, since 1786 as an external member. He died as an emigrant in Paris.
