Important personalities, issue 1979 With the illustrations of important personalities, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues six special postage stamps. No Special First Day Cover Special Cancellation from March 20 to May 19, 1979 Important Figures 20 Pfennig Value: Arthur Scheunert (June 7, 1879 to January 10, 1957) 1923 Professor of Nutritional Physiology at the University of Leipzig, later President of the Reich Institute for Vitamin Testing and vitamin research, worked since 1948 first as deputy director, then director of the Institute of Nutrition Research and the Institute of Vitamin Research and Vitaminprüfungen (now Central Institute for Nutrition of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR in Potsdam-Rehbrücke). He was also Vice President of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences since 1951. Arthur Scheunert was awarded the Nobel Prize of the First Class in 1951 for his important research in the field of food and nutrition. Since 1953 he belongs to the today's academy of the sciences of the GDR as Ordentliches member. The symbols on the special postage stamp - Spike for Food, Aesculapius for Health, Test Tube for Science - corresponded to the work of Scheunert, who postulated the unity of food and nutrition as the basic concept of scientific research in the institute he led.
