Important Personalities, Edition 1978 To commemorate important personalities, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues seven special postage stamps. No special First Day Cover Special cancellation from 18 July to 17 September 1978 70 Pfennig value: ALBRECHT VON GRAEFE (May 22, 1828 to July 20, 1870) Albrecht von Graefe was the most important representative of the period, which is referred to as the reform of ophthalmology , After extensive training with the most famous ophthalmologists of that time in Prague, Paris, Vienna and London, he founded an ophthalmic clinic in Berlin in 1850/51, which he quickly developed into a first-class school in Europe. The majority of Europe's top ophthalmologists went through his school. It is rightly said that it began the history of modern ophthalmology. Best known is the introduction of the eye mirror designed by Herman von Helmholtz into clinical practice by A. v. Chr. Graefe. In the same year in which Helmholtz published the description of his eye-mirror, Graefe recognized his great importance for ophthalmology. With his help, he has recognized and described many diseases of the fundus for the first time. One of his greatest discoveries, however, is the surgical treatment of the Green Star, which until then was regarded as incurable, by a lris cut, which is still performed today in certain forms. Finally, he significantly improved the operation methods of the cataract. All these achievements together with the magic of his personality have brought him the love and respect of the ophthalmologists up to the present time.
