He founded the first Musterlaboratorium in Germany and in 1860 became president of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and General Conservator of the scientific collections of the state. The name of this eminent researcher and teacher combines excellence in nearly all areas of chemistry at the time. From the large number of his research results may be mentioned - from the technical chemistry work on cyanide potassium for the Blutlaugensalzfabrikation, on the electroforming and the method of silvering the glass for the mirror production; - from analytical chemistry methods of determination of oxygen of air, salt and urea in urine of man and carnivorous plants, method of separating cobalt from nickel, etc. a. His main merits, however, lie in the field of organic chemistry. Here he succeeded in 1840 the synthesis of nitrogenous bases. As the founder of agricultural chemistry, he created the foundations of scientific soil cultivation. Liebig was elected as a thirty-year-old in 1833 as a member of the Berlin Academy, today's Academy of Sciences of the GDR.
