No special First Day Cover Special cancellation from 18 July to 17 September 1978 On 11 August 1978, the Socialist Sports Movement honors the 200th anniversary of the birth of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn. His groundbreaking achievements in developing the theory and practice of gymnastics, combined with his patriotic attitude and his active participation in the struggle against the Napoleonic foreign rule, introduced a new stage in the development of physical culture in Germany at the beginning of the 19th century. Jahn's achievements belong to the progressive humanistic heritage, which is honored and maintained in the development of the socialist body culture in the GDR. On the occasion of his birthday, a central ceremony will be held in his birthplace Lanz (Krs. Ludwigslust). In the GDR there are numerous sports-cultural events and scientific publications that honor its historical achievement.
