Meritorious Personalities of the German Labor Movement - Issue 1977 The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues three special postage stamps depicting meritorious personalities of the German labor movement. No special first-day cover envelope Special cancellation from 18 October to 17 December 1977 Meritful personalities of the German workers' movement August Fröhlich Son of a small farmer, was born on 31 December 1877 in Sippelsfeld (Palatinate). Joined the German Metalworkers' Union in 1895, worked as district manager of the German Metalworkers' Union in Berlin-Moabit from 1899 to 1901, was from 1902 to 1906 authorized representative of the German Metalworkers' Association in Brandenburg, and then many years as managing director of the German metalworker Association in Altenburg (Thuringia) active. He became a member of the Social Democratic Party in 1900; from 1904 to 1906 he was chairman of the local association Lehndorf the Social Democratic Party of Germany. During the November Revolution of 1918 he was chairman of the Workers' and Soldiers Council in Altenburg. From 1919 to 1933 he was a member of the state parliaments of Sachsen-Altenburg and Thuringia. In this period, he worked as a councilor of the Altenburg state government, as Minister of State of the Thuringian state government and from May 1924 as a member of the Reichstag. During the Hitler dictatorship, he was arrested several times and was imprisoned for several months. After liberation from fascist German imperialism, he was one of the Social Democratic functionaries who put all their energy into creating the unity of the workers' movement. From 1946 to 1952 he was a member of the national leadership of Thuringia of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany, was a member of the state assembly in Thuringia and was its vice president and president of the Thuringian state parliament. 1949/1950 Member of the Provisional People's Chamber and until 1958 Vice-President of the Landkammer der DDR. August Frölich, who became an honorary citizen of the city of Weimar in 1952, died on 22 January 1966 in Weimar.
