Meritorious Personalities of the German Labor Movement - Issue 1977 The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues three special postage stamps depicting meritorious personalities of the German labor movement. No special First Day Cover Special cancellation from October 18 to December 17, 1977 Meritorious personalities of the German workers' movement Ernst Meyer Son of a locomotive driver, was born on 10 July 1887 in Prostken (East Prussia). In 1908 he became a member of the Social Democratic Party and from 1913 to 1915 he worked as a political editor at "Vorwärts". In 1916 he was the first editor of the "Spartakusbriefe" and was imprisoned for several months in the same year for spreading literature of the Spartacist group. He welcomed the Great Socialist October Revolution, pleaded with the policies of the Bolsheviks and fought against the imperialist war. In 1918/1919 he headed the Soviet-Russian telegraph agency in Berlin. From 1918 he belonged to the headquarters of the Communist Party of Germany and until 1929 the Central Committee of the Communist Party. He played a significant role in the successful realization of the united front policy of the Communist Party of Germany. From 1926 to 1928 he was a member of the Prussian Council of State; since 1928 member of the Prussian Landtag. Ernst Meyer, who had a significant share in the successful realization of the united front policy of the Communist Party of Germany, died after a long and serious illness on February 2, 1930 in Hermannswerder near Potsdam.
