Meritorious Personalities of the German Labor Movement - Issue 1977 The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues three special postage stamps depicting meritorious personalities of the German labor movement. No special First Day Cover Special cancellation from October 18 to December 17, 1977 Meritorious Personalities of the German Workers' Movement Gerhart Eisler Son of an Austrian philosophy professor, was born on 20 February 1897 in Leipzig. From 1918 to 1920 he was a member of the Communist Party of Austria, joined in 1921 in Berlin the Communist Party of Germany and was from the same year until 1925 a member of the Berlin district leadership of the Communist Party of Germany. Already in 1919 he worked as a secretary of the journal "Communist" founded by emigrated Hungarian Communists. Since then, his life has been closely linked to journalistic activity in the ranks of the working class. 1921/22 editor of the "Red Flag" and 1922/1923 of the press service of the Communist Party of Germany. He was elected candidate of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Germany in 1927, he was from 1929 to 1931 Commissioner of the Communist International in China and until 1935 representative of the Communist International in the United States. He prepared the work of the "German freedom transmitter 29.8", then worked as a journalist in Paris, was arrested here in 1939 and held until 1941 in the concentration camp Le Vernet. In an attempt to emigrate to Mexico in 1941, he was arrested in the United States. There he carried out an extensive journalistic activity, i.a. as editor of the anti-fascist half-monthly "The German American". In the United States, he was repeatedly arrested and sentenced to prison terms and fines. In May 1949, he escaped from the United States. In the GDR he led until 1952 the Office of Information. From 1956 on he was Deputy Chairman and since 1962 Chairman of the State Broadcasting Committee of the GDR. 1968 President of the OIRT. Gerhart Eisler, who made great contributions to the development of broadcasting and television broadcasting in the GDR and to the cooperation of socialist radio and television companies, died on 21 March 1968 during a working stay in Yerevan (USSR).
