Meritorious Personalities of the German Workers 'Movement (Edition 1976) The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues four special postage stamps depicting meritorious personalities of the German workers' movement. No special first-day envelope GEORG SCHUMANN was born on November 28, 1886 in Reudnitz near Leipzig, the son of a lithographer. After completion of the locksmith apprenticeship he joined the 1905 Social Democratic Party and the German Metalworkers Association. In the following years he became the co-founder and leader of the workers' youth movement in Thuringia. Under the influence of Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg he developed into a consistent fighter against imperialism and war, which was repeatedly persecuted and imprisoned by the reaction. During the November Revolution Georg Schumann was chairman of a soldier's council. He belonged to the co-founders of the KPD in Leipzig and practiced since December 1920 responsible functions u.a. in the Central Committee, in the Central and Central Committee of the KPD. As a member of the Prussian Landtag and since 1928 as a member of the Reichstag, he developed into a leading social politician of the KPD. In the time of fascism, Georg Schumann, despite the persecution and six years of imprisonment, carried out an extensive anti-fascist work. He played a major role in the reconstruction of the illegal district party organization of Saxony, was one of the initiators and leaders of a significant anti-fascist resistance organization in 1942/43 and was instrumental in developing the Free Germany movement as a member of the operational leadership of the KPD and the anti-fascist struggle in Germany , In July 1944, Georg Schumann was again arrested, sentenced to death and murdered on January 11, 1945 in Dresden.
