Meritorious Personalities of the German Workers 'Movement (Edition 1976) The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues four special postage stamps depicting meritorious personalities of the German workers' movement. No Special First Day Cover ERNST THÄLMANN, an outstanding leader of the German and international labor movement, was born on 16 April 1886 in Hamburg, the son of a small innkeeper. Early on he got to know the hard life of the worker. With his entry into the Social Democratic Party in 1903, he gained his first political experience. As a young union official, he stood firmly on the ground of irreconcilable class struggle and advocated a revolutionary class policy within social democracy. Convened for military service in 1915, he carried out anti-militarist work against the imperialist war among his comrades. In the ranks of the USPD, to whose left forces he belonged, Ernst Thälmann fought in the days of the November Revolution for the assumption of power by the workers 'and soldiers' councils. In March 1919 he was elected deputy of the Hamburg citizenship and in May 1924 elected deputy of the Reichstag. As chairman of the Hamburg branch of the USPD, he advocated the immediate connection of the USPD to the AI ​​and the unification of the USPD with the KPD. At the Unification Party Conference in December 1920, Ernst Thälmann was elected a member of the Central Committee. Since that time he belongs to the leadership of the KPD. In the struggle for the appropriation and assertion of Leninism in the KPD and in confrontation with right-wing opportunist and leftist views, a new party leadership emerged in August 1925. Ernst Thälmann became party chairman. Under his leadership, the KPD developed into a Marxist-Leninist mass party. He also took over the management of the RFB. Member of the EKKI since 1924, Ernst Thälmann acquired great authority in the international labor movement. He felt firmly and indelibly linked to the Soviet Union. In it he saw the source of strength for the struggle of all the oppressed and exploited, and in the friendship with the Soviet Union a question of life for the German people. At an early stage, Ernst Thälmann warned of the fascist danger: "Whoever chooses Hitler chooses the war!" He saw in the unification of the German working class the most important precondition for the unification of all anti-fascist and democratic forces and the only way to prevent the fascist dictatorship. After the establishment of the Hitler dictatorship, arrested on March 3, 1933, Ernst Thalmann remained a dangerous opponent to the fascists even in the dungeons. He became the symbol of indomitable anti-fascism. When the Hitler Fascists saw their defeat approach as a result of the victories of the Red Army and the freedom struggle of the peoples, Ernst Thälmann was shot on 18 August 1944 in the Buchenwald concentration camp behind.
