Meritorious Personalities of the German Workers 'Movement (Edition 1976) The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues four special postage stamps depicting meritorious personalities of the German workers' movement. No special first-day envelope WILHELM KOENEN was born on April 7, 1886 in Hamburg, the son of a working-class family. He joined the 1903 SPD and 1904 the free unions. He expressed his solidarity with Karl Liebknecht's refusal to accept war credits and actively participated in the November Revolution of 1918. As a leading functionary of the USPD, he advocated joining the Communist International and uniting with the KPD. For many years he was a member of the Central Committee of the KPD. Wilhelm Koenen was a member of the Reichstag, a member of the Prussian Council of State and a city councilor of Berlin, one of the leading members of the KPD. After the establishment of the fascist dictatorship he performed successful anti-fascist work in France, Czechoslovakia and Great Britain. Returning from emigration at the end of 1945, Wilhelm Koenen campaigned in Saxony for the unity of the workers' movement. Here he was from 1946 to 1948, together with Otto Buchwitz national chairman of the SED. Since the founding of the SED he belonged to the party executive committee or the central committee of the party. Great merits Wilhelm Koenen acquired as a leading functionary in the People's Congress movement and in the National Front of the GDR. Since 1949 member of the Volkskammer of the GDR, he held important parliamentary functions in this body. Highly honored by party and state, the meritorious revolutionary died on 19 October 1963 in Berlin.
