No special first day cover envelope Important figures 35-pfennig value Lion Feuchtwanger Lion Leuchtwanger, one of the most important novelists of our century, was born on July 7, 1884 in Munich. He died in emigration on 21 December 1958 in Pacific Palisades (USA), where he was already during the period of his emigration. After graduating, he worked since 1908 as a publisher, theater critic, translator and finally as a writer. He worked for a time with Bertold Brecht and was among those bourgeois-humanist writers who actively fought against fascism. A trip to the Soviet Union in 1937 made him an experience that had a lasting effect on his work. He escaped from the fascists with great difficulty and lived in the USA since 1941. Lion Feuchtwanger has gained world renown especially as a writer of historical novels. His numerous works, i.a. "The siblings Oppenheim", "Exile", "The Jewish War", "Goya or The Bad Path of Knowledge" and "The Jewess of Toledo", at the same time reflect his own path that takes him from the bourgeois class to Marxism influenced position has led. He used historical materials, cleverly using his artistic possibilities, to deal with current contemporary issues of his time. He was always concerned, especially since the experience of fascist barbarism, with the unity of humanistic spirituality and political action. The first German state of workers and peasants honored the world-famous writer with the National Prize and an honorary doctorate from the Humboldt University Berlin. Feuchtwanger has been closely associated with the German Democratic Republic since its founding. A literary award, which is awarded annually by the Academy of Arts of the GDR for historical novels, bears the name Lion Feuchtwangers.
