Meritorious Personalities of the German Workers 'Movement The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues eight special postage stamps depicting meritorious personalities of the German workers' movement. Three more values of this series appear in the III. No special first day cover. Meritorious personalities of the German labor movement EDWIN HOERNLE was born on 11 December 1883 in Cannstatt (Württemberg) as the son of a pastor. In 1910 he joined the Social Democratic Party and worked as an editor of socialist newspapers. In the First World War he turned decisively against the "Burgfriedenspolitik" of the right-wing leaders of the social-democracy and was pursued as a member of the Spartakusgruppe because of its consistent anti-imperialist and antimilitaristischen fight. As a member of the Greater Stuttgart Workers 'and Soldiers' Council, he campaigned for an alliance with Soviet Russia. He wrote fables and revolutionary poems, ia. the text of the workers' song "Brothers, see, the red flag. Since its founding Hoernle was a member of the KPD and from 1921 its headquarters and had an excellent share in the preparation of the agricultural policy of the KPD. On behalf of the KPD he went to the Soviet Union in 1933, where he worked at the International Agricultural Institute and later at the World Economic Institute. As a member of the National Committee "Free Germany", to which he belonged since its foundation, he worked on the re-education of German prisoners of war. Returning to Germany in May 1945, he took a leading part in the anti-fascist-democratic upheaval in the countryside and was one of the organizers of the democratic land reform in the Soviet occupation zone. He had a large share in the union of the two workers' parties. First President of the German Central Administration for Agriculture and Forestry, he was appointed Vice President of the German Academy of Administration in September 1949. Since 1951 he was a full member of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences. The meritorious revolutionary died on June 21, 1952 in Bad Liebenstein.
