Berlin Structures The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes six multicolored postage stamps with illustrations of Berlin buildings. Important buildings in the German Democratic Republic All buildings depicted on the special stamps were badly damaged in the Second World War. Their careful restoration and wise use document the great responsibility of the socialist state for the care and preservation of important cultural treasures of the past in the German Democratic Republic. Nationalgalerie (70 pfennig value) The Nationalgalerie on the Museum Island was designed by August Stüler and built by Heinrich Strack between 1866 and 1872. Interior work and attachment of the plastic jewelry lasted until 1876. The museum floors rest on a 16m high substructure, which houses magazines, workshops and offices. A staircase leads to the right and left of the lower entrance to the vestibule, which is supported by eight Corinthian columns. An equestrian statue of the Prussian king, created in 1874 by Gustav Bläser, stands on the mighty staircase. The portico, longitudinal walls and staircase walls of the National Gallery are decorated with rich plastic ornaments. He varies the theme of homage to the history of German art and its famous masters as well as teaching and art practice. After repair of parts destroyed in the Second World War, the collection of German art of the 19th century was housed here.
