XI. Olympic Winter Games 1972 To the XI. Olympic Winter Games 1972 in Sapporo (Japan), the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issued six multicolored special postage stamps, two of which with surcharge. The sums raised will be made available to the Society to promote the Olympic idea in the GDR. XI. Olympic Winter Games With the issue of the six special postage stamps the XI. 1972 Olympic Winter Games in Sapporo appreciated. The motives chosen were six winter Olympic sports that have successfully developed in the German Democratic Republic. Luge (5 Pfennig value) Here a two-way sledge is shown. Among the toboggan athletes in the world, our association enjoys a high reputation. Since 1956, the German Democratic Republic has been a member of the International Toboggan Federation. The constant successes of our race sled athletes prove the value of generous support from the government and mass sports organizations in the GDR. And these are some of the numerous international successes of our race sled athletes: 1964 in Innsbruck Ortrun Enderlein and Thomas Köhler Olympic champion; Klaus Bonsack and Inge Geisler silver medalist; 1968 in Grenoble Köhler / Bonsack Olympic champion in double seater; Silver medal in single-seater for Thomas Köhler and bronze medal for Klaus Bonsack in single-seater. The Olympic idea and the high level of physical culture and sport in the German Democratic Republic form the main content in the design of these special postage stamps.
