Berlin Structures The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes six multicolored postage stamps with illustrations of Berlin buildings. Important buildings in the German Democratic Republic All buildings depicted on the special stamps were badly damaged in the Second World War. Their careful restoration and wise use document the great responsibility of the socialist state for the care and preservation of important cultural treasures of the past in the German Democratic Republic. Ermelerhaus (25-pfennig value) Built in the 18th century, this residential building takes its name from the tobacco manufacturer Wilhelm Ermeler, who acquired it in 1824. He had the facade decorated with fine relief decoration. These friezes between floors set the horizontal of the house in a tense relationship to the tall windows. The central axis is preferred to risalitartig. It is crowned on the roof by two allegorical figures. After the destruction of the war on the building was eliminated, the council library moved in the fifties. Later, the house was demolished and faithfully restored to the Friedrichsgracht, near the Märkisches Museum, and furnished as an old Berlin restaurant.
