XI. Olympic Winter Games 1972 To the XI. Olympic Winter Games 1972 in Sapporo (Japan), the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issued six multicolored special postage stamps, two of which with surcharge. The sums raised will be made available to the Society to promote the Olympic idea in the GDR. XI. Olympic Winter Games With the issue of the six special postage stamps the XI. 1972 Olympic Winter Games in Sapporo appreciated. The motives chosen were six winter Olympic sports that have successfully developed in the German Democratic Republic. Biathlon (25-pfennig value) Biathlon was first held in 1960 in Squaw Valley at the Olympic Games. The first biathlon relay was run in 1968 in Grenoble. This discipline requires special physical strength and skill and is also receiving increasing attention in our republic. The Olympic idea and the high level of physical culture and sport in the German Democratic Republic form the main content in the design of these special postage stamps.
